Negative Effects of Binge-Watching Netflix and other Streaming Services

Enjoying a movie or two for about three hours may not be a bad thing. But if you constantly watch your favorite TV series for a good number of hours everyday, then we really have a problem!

First, binge-watching can truly affect mental health. Issues such as fatigability, poor quality of sleep (insomnia) and some mood disturbances are just some of the negative effects (1).

Experts are looking for reasons why people tends to spend more time watching TV. There are behavioral factors, how it affects their daily routine, motivations to watch in extended time period, is it part of a hobby or leisure activity, or could considered as an addiction already?

Some people clearly admits that they have lost control to their binge-watching behaviors. So researchers are pointing to few reasonable factors – availability, type, and quality of narratives and characters involved in the TV series they are watching.

And uncontrollable binge-watching doesn’t just trigger insomnia or fatigue, it also lead to nightmares due to unhealthy eating before bedtime.

Watching television is much satisfying and enjoyable if combined with junk foods like colas, alcohol beverages, chips or sweet snacks.

Is this sounds like you? If yes, then you are in great danger. According to a study about food and diet, bing-eating before bed triggers brain waves that causes nightmares (2).

How Can this Addiction Make You Fat?

Because of the tendency to eat while watching movies is high, most people treat themselves with foods while binge-watching on Netflix and other streaming platforms.

And what’s worse, mindless munching is sometimes caused by what’s happening on screen (3).

What’s more? Night time snacking of junk foods contributes to unhealthy eating patterns and represent high risk for obesity. People often consume sweets like ice creams, cakes and shakes, while others love chips, French fries and many other types of fast foods.

According to this research (4), people who watch TV for more than four hours daily are also at greater risk of inflammatory-related death. On average, the study suggests a 12% increased risk for every extra hour of watching your favorite TV series or movie.

A study was conducted in Saudi Arabia to determine the association between watching television and obesity in children of school-age (5).

Students who watched TV for more than three hours per day, ate more than three snack times per day, have the tendency to further increase their watch hours at night and showed higher body mass index (BMI).

Excessive time on the television also negates the possibility of any physical activity for an individual, which is also a big factor for weight gain or obesity.

A study in Polish society featured more than 50,000 middle-age women for six years. For every two hours they spent watching television daily, an average of 23% higher risk of becoming obese and another 14% higher risk of developing diabetes (6).

Ways to Prevent Weight Gain While Watching TV

We often binge-watch to get some relaxing time from our busy schedules and various stresses in life. And since these streaming platforms have that “autoplay” feature to rely on, so you’ll get to the next episode instantly and effortlessly, an hour or two of your time is now occupied.

That means there is a big chance that you will eat more as you watch more. As you eat unhealthy foods, your blood sugar will increase and your risk of cardiovascular diseases will spike to the roof, not to mention being obese and other chronic diseases such as cancers.

So the best way to avoid getting your health hampered is to identify the triggers. Here are some of the factors that can trigger mindless munching while watching TV.

  • Tear-jerking movies and drama series
  • Action content
  • Food related content such as cooking shows

These television genres makes most people eat while they are watching on TV. Of course, if you can control yourself, it is better to turn off the TV and keep your focus on other house chores instead such as:

  • Cooking
  • Doing the dishes
  • Cleaning your car
  • Pet your dog
  • Clean the living room
  • Do the laundry

There are many other ways to keep yourself busy and out of your TV set. Keeping a physically active lifestyle at home doesn’t just good for your health, but also helps keeps your home organized and clean.

Conclusion

So remember that binge-watching is one of the unnoticeable health hazards that you should avoid doing. There are lots of work to do that can accommodate your time so choose the best program that fits your health goals.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t watch TV, but as a mature adult, you should limit watching TV and focus on things that are much more important.
